Polystyrene is a lightweight, versatile plastic widely used across the UK in packaging, insulation, and food service industries. Known for its durability and insulation properties, it is commonly found in takeaway containers, disposable cups, and protective packaging for electronics and appliances. Despite its convenience, polystyrene poses significant environmental challenges.
In the UK, the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) has come under increasing scrutiny due to its non-biodegradable nature and difficulty to recycle. Polystyrene waste often ends up in landfills or as litter, where it can persist for hundreds of years. Its lightweight structure also makes it prone to dispersal by wind, contributing to marine and urban pollution.
Recognising these issues, the UK government has introduced measures to reduce single-use plastic consumption, including restrictions on polystyrene food containers and cups in England as of October 2023. Many businesses are now transitioning to more sustainable alternatives, such as biodegradable or compostable packaging.
Recycling initiatives do exist, but they are limited due to the material’s low density and high transportation costs. Public awareness and innovation in sustainable materials are essential to replace polystyrene effectively. Reducing reliance on polystyrene is a key step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future in the UK.
